ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins braced for it all week, and now it’s a reality: Tight end Jordan Reed won’t play Sunday vs. Arizona. He was unlikely to play all along, but the Redskins had left out some hope that he might recover in time.

But now their hope is that he can return for the following week at Philadelphia.

“That’s the plan,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said.

Reed will stay in Ashburn to receive more treatment on the Grade 3 separation of the AC joint in his left shoulder as the team plays at Arizona. The Redskins aren’t surprised that Reed will not play, considering he never practiced, his range of motion was limited, and he was still in pain.

It’s the third game Reed will have missed this season. He leads all NFL tight ends with 59 receptions and is second on the Redskins with five touchdown catches. The Redskins have a dynamic combination at tight end when Reed plays because of Vernon Davis. But Davis’ presence also means they can survive without Reed. Washington is 1-1 without Reed this season and gained a combined 910 total yards in those two games (against Philadelphia and Detroit).

They also have one of the best receiving groups in the NFL with DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jamison Crowder.

Also on the injury list, defensive end Anthony Lanier (leg) is out.

Seven players are listed as questionable: linebacker Terence Garvin (shoulder), end Ricky Jean Francois (knee), tackle Ty Nsekhe (ankle), guard Brandon Scherff (ankle), corner Bashaud Breeland (ankle), long snapper Nick Sundberg (back) and running back Chris Thompson (illness).
