ASHBURN, Virginia -- Washington Redskins linebackers Zach Brown and Ryan Anderson have been ruled out for the season finale at the New York Giants.

This will be Brown's third consecutive missed start as he gets ready to enter free agency. The Redskins would like for him to return; after 13 games, Brown was leading the NFL in tackles. He had been playing with a sore Achilles as well as a knee issue. Anderson also is bothered by a knee injury.

"He obviously had an impact on our team," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "Obviously you love his speed sideline to sideline. There are some things to clean up. We would love to have him back for another year with the same defense, but we understand he is a free agent and we don't know what is going to happen there. But he had a positive impact."

The Redskins will start Zach Vigil and Martrell Spaight at inside linebacker with rookie Josh Harvey-Clemons continuing to play in sub-packages against the pass. Vigil, who had been cut by Washington before the season and was re-signed in November, impressed Gruden with his performance against the Denver Broncos. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles, with 12 solo stops.

"The most impressive part to me is the way he communicates the defense," Gruden said. "He's been outstanding not only with his communication, but with his play. He's reading the runs and fitting and a solid tackler and he's been good in pass coverage."

Anderson, a rookie second-round pick from Alabama, will finish having played 14 games but without a sack. He played in a reserve role at outside linebacker behind starters Preston Smith and Ryan Kerrigan. The Redskins can use Pete Robertson on the outside. They also have Junior Galette.

Defensive lineman Ziggy Hood (fractured elbow) won't play either. Six Redskins are listed as questionable: Spaight (ankle/illness), linebacker Ryan Kerrigan (calf), receiver Robert Davis (concussion), guard Kyle Kalis (back/ankle) and defensive lineman Terrell McClain (toe).
