Redskins' defensive line a strength of 53-man roster

ASHBURN, Va. -- Here’s a player-by-player look at the Washington Redskins' 53-man roster:

QUARTERBACK (3)

Kirk Cousins: Gets his best shot to prove what he can do.

Colt McCoy: Future coach expected to be the No. 2 passer.

Robert Griffin III: He remains on the roster, but the question is for how long?

RUNNING BACK (4)

Alfred Morris: Shooting for his fourth 1,000-yard season; he will soon become Redskins’ fifth all-time leading rusher.

Matt Jones: The coaches really like the rookie but wonder about his durability.

Chris Thompson: Small but quick, he’ll provide a change of pace.

Darrel Young: Good blocker and special teams standout.

RECEIVER (6)

DeSean Jackson: Big-play threat led the NFL with 20.88 yards per catch in 2014.

Pierre Garcon: The Redskins moved him to the Z position, hoping it will lead to more production.

Andre Roberts: Needs to do much better than 36 catches out of 71 targets, as happened last year.

Ryan Grant: Continues to be a terrific route-runner but not fast or big.

Jamison Crowder: Will push Roberts in the slot and help as a punt returner.

Rashad Ross: Hard work with Jackson this summer paid off with a roster spot.

TIGHT END (2)

Jordan Reed: Still athletic; if he can stay healthy he’ll produce. If.

Derek Carrier: A former Division III receiver can do more than just catch.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10)

Trent Williams: Shed 20 pounds in the offseason; extremely talented but must be more consistent.

Shawn Lauvao: Needs to be a stronger force as a run blocker.

Kory Lichtensteiger: Not the biggest guy, but coaches love his consistency.

Brandon Scherff: Rookie guard will have growing pains, but coaches love his toughness.

Morgan Moses: Impressive size; Moses improved from his rookie year.

Josh LeRibeus: Made the transition from guard to backup center in his fourth season.

Spencer Long: Opened camp as starting right guard, but his play did not warrant keeping the job.

Arie Kouandjio: Blocks well in a short area; has a nasty disposition on the field.

Ty Nsekhe: First played Arena ball in 2009; has been on an NFL roster for two games.

Tom Compton: Will help as much as a blocking tight end as anything else.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Stephen Paea: Free-agent signee shows good quickness, strength.

Terrance Knighton: Run-plugger in the middle; can move better laterally than expected.

Jason Hatcher: Redskins need to keep him healthy so he can provide pass-rush help.

Chris Baker: Had a good training camp; if he doesn’t start he’ll play quite a bit.

Kedric Golston: Veteran lineman can help at nose and end.

Ricky Jean Francois: Big personality in the locker room; will help as a nickel rusher.

Frank Kearse: Played well as a backup in 2014 but had injury issues this summer.

LINEBACKER (8)

Ryan Kerrigan: Needs more help in the pass rush this season.

Perry Riley: Same old story -- good coming downhill; issues in coverage.

Keenan Robinson: Showed good flashes of ability last season; far from finished.

Trent Murphy: Added bulk in offseason and will start for now.

Preston Smith: Once he stops thinking so much, he’ll become a starter.

Jackson Jeffcoat: Took a good step from last season; showed good burst as a rusher vs. backups.

Will Compton: Disciplined player fits well with coordinator Joe Barry.

Martrell Spaight: Has some pop vs. the run but a long way to go in pass game.

CORNERBACK (5)

Chris Culliver: Brings some swag and attitude to the defense -- and cover skills.

DeAngelo Hall: Must show that at 31, he can still play after an Achilles injury.

David Amerson: The Redskins like his ability but not his inconsistency.

Justin Rogers: Will cover in the slot until Bashaud Breeland returns from suspension in Week 2.

Deshazor Everett: Made the roster with excellent special teams play.

SAFETY (5)

Dashon Goldson: Redskins like his leadership quite a bit – and say he can still play.

Duke Ihenacho: Coverage skills still need work; will have chance to make plays in run game.

Jeron Johnson: Didn’t make enough plays to unseat Ihenacho but will help special teams.

Trenton Robinson: Loves to hit; good special teams player.

Kyshoen Jarrett: They love his attitude and ability to play multiple spots.

SPECIALISTS (3)

Kai Forbath: Career 88.1 percent accuracy rate, but kickoffs still need work.

Tress Way: A terrific find last season; has a big leg.

Nick Sundberg: Consistent long snapper; a Redskins mainstay.
