Siyani Chambers expected to return to Harvard in 2016-17

Men's College Basketball, Harvard Crimson

Harvard's top returning player, senior point guard Siyani Chambers, will take a voluntary leave of absence from school this year after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee while working out over the summer.

Harvard made the announcement Wednesday, saying Chambers is expected to return to the program in 2016-17 and complete his degree. Chambers will withdraw from school because of an Ivy League rule in which graduate students are not allowed to play.

Chambers is a three-time All-Ivy League player who has been a part of three consecutive NCAA tournament teams with the Crimson. He averaged 9.9 points last season and has been a starter for coach Tommy Amaker for the past three seasons.

Harvard finished 22-8 last season and won the Ivy for the third consecutive year, but the Crimson will not be favored to win the league this season -- especially without Chambers. Princeton, Columbia and Yale likely will be picked in front of Harvard this season in the preseason poll.

Harvard also lost its top two leading scorers from a year ago -- Wesley Saunders and Steve Moundou-Missi -- to graduation.
