British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has said former England international footballer Wayne Rooney "would love" to fight in a charity boxing match.

Rooney -- who plays in MLS for D.C. United, but will be moving to Championship side Derby County in January -- is a long-time boxing fan and recently appeared on a podcast hosted by Hearn.

Speaking to TalkSport, Hearn said: "I've got a podcast, [Rooney] was on there recently. He loves it -- he's been boxing in amateur clubs.

"Wayne would love to do a charity fight."

Rooney's love of boxing was on full display in 2015, when the striker was filmed boxing -- and seemingly getting knocked out by -- fellow footballer Phil Bardsley in the former's kitchen.

When asked about the likelihood of Rooney, who is all-time top scorer for both England and Manchester United, actually stepping into the ring, Hearn said: "The only way I'd do a fight like that is if there was a huge amount of money for charity.

"I said that to Wayne Rooney before, he was joking about fighting [former England and United teammate] Rio [Ferdinand] before, when Rio was getting into his boxing.

"That's an opportunity, a Sport Relief event or something like that, to make big money for charity."
