Reggie Smith transfers to EIU

Men's College Basketball, UNLV Rebels, Marquette Golden Eagles, Eastern Illinois Panthers

Former UNLV guard Reggie Smith has transferred to Eastern Illinois, Panthers coach Jay Spoonhour announced on Thursday.

Smith, a 6-foot guard, began his college career at Marquette and played eight games as a freshman. He transferred to UNLV following the 2010 fall semester at Marquette, sat out a year at UNLV and played in 20 games off bench for the Rebels last season. He averaged 2.5 points in 6.1 minutes for UNLV.

Smith is expected to have to sit out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining. Smith could also be given a family hardship waiver. When UNLV announced Smith was leaving the program in March, its release included a quote from Smith saying he was transferring to be closer to home because of a family illness.

Smith was one of the Illinois' top high school players in the Class of 2010. He starred at Thornton High School in Harvey, Ill. He averaged 18.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals his senior season.

"Reggie has played at the highest level of college basketball," Spoonhour said in a statement. "He is an explosive player who will give our team some real speed and athleticism at the guard."

Spoonhour was hired in April to replace Mike Miller as Eastern Illinois' coach. The Panthers went 12-17 overall and 5-11 in the Ohio Valley last season.
