Syracuse has hired Bowling Green's Dino Babers as its new coach, the school announced Saturday.

"It is a true honor to have been selected to lead Syracuse University football, a program steeped in rich tradition, excellence, and success, both on and off the field," Babers said in a statement. "There were many coaching opportunities out there but none more attractive or exciting than this one."

Babers will be officially introduced at a news conference Monday.

Babers spent four years at Baylor on coach Art Briles' coaching staff before being hired as the head coach at Eastern Illinois for two seasons, and then Bowling Green for two seasons. He is 37-16 as a head coach.

Bowling Green beat Northern Illinois 34-14 on Friday night to win the MAC championship. The team finished the season 10-3.

"We wanted a leader who had a proven track record and a strong commitment to student welfare," Syracuse athletic director Mark Coyle said. "Dino's background as a former student-athlete combined with his head coaching experience, and dynamic offensive mind make him a great fit for our program. We are committed to building a winning Syracuse Football program and today reinforces that commitment."

Syracuse fired Scott Shafer before the season finale, a 20-17 win over Boston College that he stayed on to coach after eight straight losses. Shafer went 14-23 in three seasons with the team.
