Boston College to upgrade athletic facitilies

BOSTON -- Boston College has announced plans for $200 million in athletics facilities upgrades including a new field house, recreation center and intramural playing fields.

Athletic director Brad Bates announced the plans Monday.

The upgrades benefit both the intercollegiate and intramural programs at Boston College. The project is the result of several years of fundraising.

Talks are expected to begin with city officials on the construction of the athletics field house that would be located next to Alumni Stadium.

The 240,000-square-foot recreation center will replace the Flynn Recreation Complex. It was approved in 2009 as part of the university's master plan, and construction is set to begin this summer once permits are approved. The project is expected to take two years.

The school also will be seeking permitting for new baseball, softball and intramural fields.
