Sacramento State coach Jody Sears agrees to contract extension

Fresh off being named the Big Sky Conference co-coach of the year, Sacramento State's Jody Sears is being rewarded with a multiyear contract extension.

Athletic director Mark Orr announced Thursday that the two sides have agreed in principle to the extension, although terms will not be released until it is finalized.

Sacramento State was picked to finish 12th in the Big Sky's preseason coaches' and media polls this year but went 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Sky, handing co-champ Southern Utah its only loss. The Hornets improved by five wins from a year ago, and their six Big Sky victories were the most since joining the conference in 1996.

The 50-year-old Sears shared the Big Sky coaching award with Demario Warren of Southern Utah.

"This is a testament to the leadership that Coach Sears and his staff have provided to our student-athletes," Orr said. "He created a plan for the program, stuck to it, and the team was able to reap the rewards this season. We are all excited for what is to come for Hornet football in the future."

Sears has an 18-27 record in four seasons at Sacramento State.
