SWAC program Texas Southern named Arizona running backs coach Clarence McKinney as its new head coach on Monday.
McKinney, also Arizona's associate head coach, has spent the last decade as an assistant coach to Kevin Sumlin, first at Houston, then Texas A&M and this season with the Wildcats. Before that, McKinney was a high school coach in the Houston area.
The former Montana State player received his degree in elementary education at the University of Mary (North Dakota). He later earned a master's in educational administration from Prairie View A&M.
"We are beyond excited to bring in someone with the experience and success that Clarence McKinney has achieved at the highest levels of the collegiate ranks," Texas Southern interim athletic director Kevin Granger said. "His coaching talent, his emphasis on developing the complete student-athlete, as well as his ability to recruit locally, regionally and nationally, gives TSU a distinct advantage as we move our program to the next level."
Texas Southern went 8-25 under Michael Haywood the last three seasons, including 2-9 this year.
