The Spartans are 6-6, and finished fifth in the Big Ten's East Division. They became bowl-eligible by beating Maryland 19-16 in their final game of the regular season.
Michigan State is appearing in a bowl game for the third consecutive year, and for the 12th time in 13 seasons under head coach Mark Dantonio.
Senior defensive end Kenny Willekes has a career-high nine sacks, and was named a second-team All-American. Willekes also won the 2019 Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the nation's most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.
How did Wake Forest get here?
The Demon Deacons are 8-4, and finished tied for third in the ACC's Atlantic Division. They finished the regular season with a 39-30 loss at Syracuse.
Wake Forest is appearing in a bowl game for a program-record fourth straight season under head coach Dave Clawson, and has won its bowl game the past three years.
Speaking of All-Americans, sophomore kicker Nick Sciba converted 24 of his 25 field-goal attempts this year. His NCAA record of 34 consecutive made field goals was snapped when he missed a 48-yarder against Syracuse, but Sciba bounced back to make a 43-yarder that sent the game into overtime.
