Former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill now assisting old friend at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has joined TCU's staff as a special assistant to coach Gary Patterson.

The two Kansas natives are longtime friends, and Kill was the best man in Patterson's wedding.

Kill will be in charge of the Horned Frogs offense, but won't be one of the on-field assistant coaches. He was in a similar role at Virginia Tech last season.

TCU also said Wednesday that Bryan Applewhite is the new running backs coach and that Doug Meacham, the Frogs co-offensive coordinator from 2014-16, has returned to be the inside receivers/tight ends coach.

Kill was Minnesota's coach from 2011-15 before seizures caused by epilepsy forced him to step down. He worked as an associate athletic director at Kansas State in 2016 before being the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers in 2017. He retired from on-field coaching after that season.

In 22 seasons as a head coach at five different schools, Kill had a 152-99 record. He was 29-29 at Minnesota and led the Golden Gophers to three consecutive bowl games after previously coaching at Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Emporia State and Saginaw Valley State.
