Paul Petrino will not be retained as the coach at Idaho beyond this season, the school announced Thursday. He will coach in the Vandals' regular season finale on Saturday at Idaho State, marking the end of a nine-season run in Moscow.
"I have nothing but the utmost respect for Paul. He is a man of integrity and strong character," athletic director Terry Gawlik said in a statement. "He has helped hundreds of football student-athletes become better men. I am personally grateful for his loyalty to Vandal Athletics, his willingness to be a team player and the care and attention that he gave to his student-athletes."
Petrino has compiled a 33-66 record during his time on the Palouse, which included the program's transition from FBS to FCS. The highlight of his tenure was a 9-4 season in 2016, which was capped by a win against Colorado State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
"I'm very proud of all we accomplished during my time leading this program," Petrino said in a statement. "[My wife] Maya and I remain grateful for the opportunity and will take incredible memories with us as we transition to our next endeavor."
College Sports Solutions will assist Gawlik in the search for Petrino's replacement, the school said.
