Michigan promotes Kirk Campbell to quarterbacks coach

Michigan has promoted offensive analyst Kirk Campbell to quarterbacks coach, replacing Matt Weiss, who was fired last week.

Campbell spent the 2022 season with Michigan after two years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Old Dominion. He also spent 2017 to 2019 as an offensive analyst at Penn State, working primarily with the quarterbacks and on opponent scouting.

Campbell served as Penn State's interim quarterbacks coach for the team's 53-39 win over Memphis in the 2019 Cotton Bowl.

On Jan. 20, Michigan fired Weiss, whom university police are investigating following a report of "computer access crimes" that allegedly occurred at the school's football offices. Weiss coached Michigan's quarterbacks the past two seasons and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator alongside Sherrone Moore in 2022.

The university police crime log for Jan. 5 displays one report from an employee of "fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization." Michigan placed Weiss on administrative leave shortly before dismissing him.

"Kirk is a bright, young offensive mind that immediately meshed with our coaching staff last year," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. "Our offensive staff was really impressed with his knowledge and expertise of the entire offense, and he was integral to the success of the offense with game planning and opponent scouting. Kirk does an outstanding job developing relationships and I know he will have an outstanding rapport with our quarterbacks."

Michigan comes off of consecutive Big Ten championships and College Football Playoff appearances. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy returns for his second year as the starter after passing for 2,719 yards with 22 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2022.
