Morgan Burke announces retirement plan

Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke will retire in July 2017, the school announced Thursday.

Burke has led the Boilermakers' athletic department since 1993.

He informed university leaders of his plans more than a year ago but announced them to alumni at an event in Florida on Thursday. Michael Berghoff, chairman of the Purdue board of trustees and a former Boilermakers football player, will lead a national search to find a replacement.

Purdue's best run of sports success came in the mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s, when the men's basketball team won Big Ten titles in 1994, 1995 and 1996, the women's basketball team won a national title in 1999, and the football team under Joe Tiller went to the 2001 Rose Bowl.

The football program has fallen on hard times of late, with four consecutive losing seasons and a 6-30 record under coach Darrell Hazell.
