GOLD COAST -- Australian Michael Shelley has swept past a collapsed early leader to win the gold medal in a dramatic men's marathon at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
In a stunning finish, Scottish leader Callum Hawkins collapsed in the gutter at the 40km mark while well clear of Shelley.
The Gold Coast local ran past Hawkins who was sprawled on the ground to win in two hours 16 minutes 46 seconds and defend the title he won in Glasgow four years ago.
Looking like he was on his way to gold, Hawkins started to wobble badly about the 39km mark, threw his hat away and then fell into the gutter on a hot and sunny morning on the Gold Coast. He struggled to his knees, eventually climbed onto his unsteady legs and resumed running.
But he looked in a terrible state and laboured on for another few hundred metres, unable to keep a straight line as he veered all over the road until collapsing on Sundale Bridge, narrowly missing his head on the metal barrier.
He lay on the ground for up to a minute before medical attention arrived as Shelley came over the bridge and past the ailing Scot.
Ugandan Munyo Mutai took the silver in 2:19.02, with Scotland's Robbie Simpson claiming bronze in 2:19.36.
Team Scotland tweeted after the race that Hawkins had been taken to hospital but there were no major concerns.
