Mendis reverses decision to quit

Duleep Mendis, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket, has decided to reverse his decision to resign after the government's dramatic takeover of the board's administration, and has resumed work after coming to an agreement with the new government-appointed interim committee.

Mendis had confirmed his resignation on Tuesday morning, hours before armed police carrying automatic weapons stormed into the board's Colombo headquarters and handed over control to the interim committee, which had been denied access during a five-week impasse.

But with the interim committee having been given full control, Mendis had second thoughts and sent a letter to them asking for his job back, and his plea was accepted on Wednesday morning. He resumed work immediately.

The interim committee also met with board employees during the day and have been anxious to stress that there will be no witch-hunt within the administration. "We are trying to familiarise ourselves with what has been going on and we just want people to carry on with their normal duties so cricket can forward again," said Typhon Miranda, the interim board secretary.

The crisis finally appears to be drawing to a close after the ICC's decision to recognise the interim committee last week and the government's decision to move decisively on Tuesday. However, Thilanga Sumathipala's executive committee is still trying to challenge the sports minister in the courts.

On Wednesday, though, the courts backed the current situation for the time being, until they are able to rule on a petition from Sumathipala's team that is seeking to overturn a recent parliamentary gazette that strengthens the minister's power over the national association. The case continues on Monday.
