The first 10 days of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) ended on May 13 with all 12 teams having played four games each. Here's a lowdown from the first 24 games of the season so far:
Key takeaways: DPL finally takes off
Mohammedan Sporting Club and Prime Bank Cricket Club hold the top two positions in the points table. The tournament that played a role in toppling former BCB president Aminul Islam from his post, finally got underway in early May, swiftly after Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the interim president.
The DPL is the most important competition in Bangladesh's domestic calendar, but due to a dispute between the clubs and the Aminul-led BCB, it was stalled for several months. In fact some of the lower leagues in the Dhaka league system took place with many clubs boycotting the competition. These leagues could reportedly be replayed in the coming months, though there is no confirmation yet.
The DPL this season will run into June, considered the start of the off-season in Bangladesh. It will not have its usual Super League, which is the top six teams from the first phase playing each other again to determine the league champions. The bottom two finishers will be relegated to the First Division League next season, as opposed to the usual relegation playoffs played between the three teams at the bottom.
Best batters: Zakir Hasan, Shahadat, Samiun Basir
Dhaka Leopards' Zakir Hasan got off to a flying start in the league, with his 137 against City Club, and 74 against Abahani Limited.
Prime Bank's Shahadat Hossain got three fifties in the first four games, while 19-year-old Samiun Basir, playing for Legends of Rupganj, has scored a century and taken six wickets in the league so far. Mohammad Naim, meanwhile, holds the league's highest score so far, with his 145 helping Abahani beat Rupganj Tigers.
Best bowlers: Al Islam, Mrittunjoy Chowdhury
Mystery spinner Al Islam is the pick of the bowlers so far with 15 wickets, including figures of 6 for 21 against Gazi Group Cricketers. He took a hat-trick in that game, by removing captain Salman Hossain, Mahfuzul Islam and Aridul Islam Akash across two overs. Left-arm fast bowler Mrittunjoy Chowdhury took five wickets against Rupganj Tigers and six wickets against Bashundhara Strikers in consecutive matches for Mohammedan.
Best match
Abahani lost to both promoted sides Dhaka Leopard and City Club in their first two games. Their match against City Club has so far been the most thrilling of the league. Chasing 210 in 27 overs, City Club were in trouble at 124 for 6 as their top-scorer and captain Mehedi Maruf fell for 71. City Club's Nos. 7, 8 and 9 - Tahjibul Islam, Mohammad Enamul and Abdul Gaffar Saqlain - struck three sixes each to get City Club over the line with eight balls to spare.
Points to ponder
Mohammedan and Prime Bank have made unbeaten starts in the first four rounds of matches. Defending champions Abahani made one of their worst starts to the league by losing their first two matches but they bounced back with two wins in a row. Rupganj Tigers remain winless at the bottom, while seven teams are on four points each.
Players to watch
Samiun turned heads with his scintillating and unbeaten 116 off 70 against Bashundhara. Basir struck six fours and ten sixes and became only the second batter after Elton Chigumbura to score a century in the DPL's List-A era. With his left-arm spin also fetching him six wickets so far, he is one to watch for.
