Colombia's Egan Bernal in intensive care after training crash

Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal is in intensive care in a Bogata hospital after undergoing surgery on Tuesday following a training crash.

The 2019 Tour de France winner suffered extensive injuries after crashing into a stationary bus on Monday, including a fractured femur and kneecap, as well as injuries to his spine, neck and chest.

In a statement, the University of La Sabana Hospital said Bernal had two separate operations to his spine to stabilise the vertebrae fracture, and reconstructive surgery on his right leg where it was medically pinned.

The statement added: "We will wait for his progress over the next 72 hours in the Intensive Care Unit to see the response to the course of treatment established for this high-energy trauma.

"We have immediately begun the rehabilitation process to achieve the best possible results with our patient."

Bernal, 25, who won the 2021 Giro d'Italia, was at a team training camp in Gachancipa, about 50 km north of Bogota, preparing for the Tour de France. However, he may be forced to restructure his season and miss the three-week grand tour if he does not make a full recovery in time.

After the crash Bernal was rushed to hospital by medical personnel from his Ineos Grenadiers team and was "conscious upon arrival," the British team said, while police said the accident was under investigation.

On Tuesday the team released a further statement detailing the injuries and adding: "All of our focus is on ensuring Egan is given the best possible care as he starts on his road to recovery."

Bernal recently extended his contract with Ineos Grenadiers to 2026.
