Monster Energy held two annual events - DarkFest and the BMX Triple Challenge - both in the third week of March in Pniel, near Stellenbosch, with Alessio 'Cornflakes' Tonoli and Natasha Bradley among the riders who stole the show.

At DarkFest; Switzerland's Tonoli was declared King of Darkness and England's Bradley - who hails from Torquay - Queen of Darkness.

Both went home with more accolades, too, as Tonoli also scooped the Muc-Off Filthiest Style along with New Zealand's Vero Sandler and Mavrix Moment with Tahiti-born Canadian Vaea Verbeeck. Bradley doubled up with the DeWalt Best Run prize, which she won along with fellow English rider Tom Isted.

Canada's Matt MacDuff's Candy Bar Flip earned Insta360 Best Clip. Austria's Elias Ruso (Double Flip on Falcon Heavy) and New Zealand's Robin Goomes (Flip Can on the Step-Up) were awarded Kenda Mind Bender.

In the BMX Triple Challenge; the USA's Brady Baker (from Toms River, New Jersey) came out tops with a best run of 98.00. Poland's Wiktor Samojlik, meanwhile, claimed Best Trick.

According to South African rider Theo Erlangsen - who is from Cape Town, around an hour-long drive from the scene of the event - DarkFest is an event where, relative to others, riders who travel to compete against each other have a supportive attitude towards each other.

"Everyone here is really good mates with each other - so actually, everyone's just trying to help each other," Erlangsen said.

"If somebody lands something that they know that they've been looking to land, everyone's stoked for each other here. That's why people love this dynamic a lot over more traditional races."
