Africa is now the only continent not covered by Overwatch League

Blizzard

Overwatch is one of the hottest esports games at the moment (and has been for some time), and with the momentum Blizzard created the Overwatch League.

It's a professional tournament that spans the globe, where teams from each region compete, and eventually reach the finals.

Blizzard also wants to expand the amateur-to-professional pool, and created Overwatch Contenders. This is a space for amateur players to work their way up into the big league by hopefully being spotted by a team or region.

In a press release on Tuesday, Blizzard announced that it will be expanding the Overwatch Contenders into more regions - and Africa is once again left out.

This means that the entire globe is covered in some way or another, but it excludes Africa. In the statement Blizzard said that Overwatch APEX, Overwatch Premier Series, and the Overwatch Pacific Championship will become Contenders Korea, Contenders China, and Contenders Pacific, respectively.

It added: "We will establish Contenders in two brand-new regions, Australia and South America. With the existing regions of North America and Europe, this brings the total number of Contenders locations to seven. With three seasons a year in seven regions, this will create more opportunities than ever before for players to challenge themselves-as well as to be noticed by Overwatch League scouts."

The biggest culprit for Africa not being granted Contender status is probably the high latency that African players experience while playing online. But that can be easily fixed with local servers, but Blizzard has been hesitant on that front.

In 2016 a petition was started to bring Overwatch servers to South Africa, but only garnered 2200 signatures.
