The closed beta for Riot Games' first-person shooter VALORANT began April 7, drawing a near-record 1.7 millions viewers on Twitch, and shortly thereafter teams began signing players or announced that they were recruiting players with the expectation that competitive play was not too far off. On April 15, Riot announced its vision for VALORANT's esports scene. Throughout its first month in closed beta, organized competition for the game began taking place, including ESPN Esports' VALORANT Invitational. In addition to teams starting to build rosters, players across other esports titles began declaring their intentions to go pro in Riot's FPS. The game officially was released to the public on June 2.
