Fantasy baseball trade reactions: Berrios, Braves and Boston

MLB, Fantasy

The surprising part of the Jose Berrios trade to the Toronto Blue Jays is not that the Jays landed a key player who fills their clearly biggest need. Berrios is the No. 25 starting pitcher on the ESPN Player Rater, a reliable, durable right-hander fantasy baseball managers have counted on for four-category production for years and his value remains about the same for his new team in 2021 and next season.

What is surprising is that the Minnesota Twins were able to acquire top prospects Austin Martin and Simeon Woods-Richardson in the deal. Yes, Berrios is under team control through 2022, so that played a role in the return, but fantasy managers in dynasty formats have to wonder what this means for Martin and Woods-Richardson. Did the Blue Jays sour on them quickly or was this simply the staggering price for Berrios?
