Urawa Red Diamonds reach Asian Champions League round of 16

SYDNEY -- Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds advanced to the round of 16 of the Asian Champions League after playing out a goalless draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday.

The draw eliminated defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande and Pohang Steelers as Urawa secured at least second place behind Group H leader Sydney FC.

Urawa, the 2007 champions, will be playing in the round of 16 for the first time since reaching for the 2008 semifinals.

FC Seoul defeated Buriram United 2-1 for their fourth victory in Group F, while Jeonbuk Motors went to the top of Group E with a 3-0 win over FC Tokyo.

Sydney FC's strong campaign comes despite a wretched season in the A-League in which they failed to make the Finals' Series.

After a first up defeat away to Urawa, Graham Arnold's side are now unbeaten in their last four matches in the competition.

They will travel to China to face Guangzhou Evergrande in their final group game next month while Urawa will host Pohang Steelers with both the Australian and Japanese sides vying for top spot.
