AFC Champions League, AFC Cup to restart in September

The Asian Football Confederation announced restart dates for its top-ranked AFC Champions League and second-tier AFC Cup club competitions on Thursday, as the organisation looks to complete the 2020 season.

The Champions League's West Zone will be the first to resume action on September 14 with group stage play lasting until September 24. Knockout rounds, previously played as a home-and-away series, will now be decided by single matches. The Round of 16 will be played on September 26 and 27, the quarterfinals on September 30, the semifinals on October 3, and the finals on December 5.

The East Zone will restart between October 16 to 19 and run till November 1, before the Round of 16 (November 3 and 4), quarterfinals (November 25), semifinals (November 28) and final take place.

Both zones will play in centralised venues, with the locations to be confirmed by the AFC.

While the Asian football calendar was brought to a halt at the start of March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the AFC continued to state that it would not need to abandon any of this year's tournaments.

The AFC Cup will also feature centralised venues for the five different zones, with the ASEAN Zone the first to get back underway on September 23.

The Central and East Zones return to action on October 20, while the West and South Zones to resume on October 23.

The inter-zone semifinals will take place on November 24 and 25 before the inter-zone final on December 2. The winner will play the West Zone champions in the tournament final on December 12.

Like the Champions League, all AFC Cup knockout round matches will be contested over a single match rather than two legs.
