Ghana have officially named Andre Ayew the team's captain for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the Fenerbahce loanee replacing Asamoah Gyan as skipper.

Gyan, who retired last week after being told he would not be the captain for the tournament, and then unretired at the behest of the country's president, has been given the title of 'general captain'.

A statement on the Ghana FA website read: "This follows a meeting with the top brass of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Normalization Committee (NC) after which approval and full backing was granted to the plans of the coach.

"Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan, as captain of the Black Stars.

"Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years has been elevated to the position of "General Captain".

Meanwhile, Kwadwo Asamoah has been named vice-captain as the Black Stars head to Egypt for the tournament that starts on 21 June.
