Arsenal forward Joel Campbell determined to fight for playing time

Arsenal forward Joel Campbell says he is determined to fight for increased playing time next season after struggling to cement his place in Arsene Wenger's team.

Campbell, 24, only started 11 league games last season and was mostly a substitute during the final two months of the campaign. The Costa Rica international still finished his first full season with the club with four goals and five assists and endeared himself to fans with his work rate on the right wing.

He will again face tough competition from the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and emerging talent Alex Iwobi, but said he enters the season with "high expectations."

Campbell said on his official website: "I have had a good holiday and now I am happy to train, to return strong, to prepare myself well in this preseason for the new campaign for which I have high expectations and I will fight with everything to have the opportunity to play and to show what I can give.

"Last season was my first full season with the team from start to finish and to me it was a very productive time, I played 30 games and that was very important for me and made me mature a lot. I could show what I'm made of, and at last the team and the fans were happy with what I have done."

Campbell had to wait a long time for his chance to show his qualities, as he signed for the Gunners in 2011 but spent four seasons on loan because of work permit issues. He can play as a central striker but has been used mainly on the wing by Wenger and could yet see even more competition for places at the Emirates if Arsenal succeed in signing a new forward this summer.

Campbell has been linked with a move back to Spain, where he had loan stints with Real Betis and Villarreal, but said he doesn't pay attention to transfer gossip.

"There are always rumours, but I don't talk about those things," he added. "I focus on doing my thing, which is to train day to day, to fight and to try to give my best."
