Gervinho's guaranteed start talk rejected by Roma boss Rudi Garcia

Gervinho says he is delighted to be back in top form for Roma, although coach Rudi Garcia has denied reserving special treatment for the forward.

Gervinho, 28, was on target twice in the Giallorossi's 4-2 win at Palermo on Sunday -- a result which eased some of the pressure on Garcia and took the Serie A runners-up from the past two seasons up to fourth in the standings.

The Ivory Coast international has now scored three goals in his last two appearances since being moved into a centre-forward position to cover for the injured Edin Dzeko and Francesco Totti.

"We played really well today [against Palermo], moving well up front," Gervinho is quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. "I'm a forward so I've got to score goals, and I'm delighted with these goals and that I am now back at my best level of form."

Gervinho's fortunes at Roma have improved since the summer, with the forward on the brink of leaving the side to join Al Jazira.

Gervinho was Garcia's first signing from Arsenal two years ago, but after an impressive first season he drifted away last term and was deemed surplus to requirements by many at the club.

Reports have since surfaced that he has been guaranteed a starting berth by Garcia all season, although the coach has denied such talk.

"It's a load of rubbish whoever is saying these things," Garcia told Mediaset. "If he's not playing well, Gervinho doesn't play. When he's in good shape, he plays and right now he's in good shape.

"He's helping the team, scoring, defending and when he's playing like this, then obviously he can help us a lot. But it's not only about Gervinho tonight.

"We've got a new squad and plenty out injured, and we hope to get them back soon. The statistics are positive -- we've got the best attack and we're playing good football, but we need to remain focused and united."

Garcia's side are next back in action against Empoli on Oct. 17, before facing Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and then visiting Serie A leaders Fiorentina.
