Atletico Madrid's Savic to play in face mask after suffering broken nose

Atletico Madrid defender Stefan Savic will play with a mask to protect his broken nose at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Montenegro international Savic fractured two bones in his nose during Saturday's 1-0 win at Granada.

But the injury will not stop him from playing as his team defend a 4-2 lead from the first leg in Germany.

An Atletico club statement said: "Stefan Savic suffered a contact fracture in his nose after receiving a blow in the last minutes of the game at Granada.

"He will be able to train and to play with the use of a protective mask."

Diego Simeone's team, beaten in the 2014 and 2016 finals by Real Madrid, are closing in on the quarterfinals again and forward Kevin Gameiro told Antena 3 TV that winning the Champions League was the final hurdle for Atleti and their manager.

"This team is made in his [Simeone's] image," Gameiro said. "He has done marvellous things at this club and brought it to a very high level.

"Now he just has the Champions League left to win. He has already won La Liga and enjoyed the highest success. But there is still one last barrier to overcome."
