Faris Ramli aims to take Home United form into Asian Cup qualifiers

Faris Ramli has been unplayable for Home United at times this season, and he targets to be the same when he dons Singapore colours over the next couple of weeks.

The Lions take on Hong Kong on Aug. 31 in an international friendly before hosting Turkmenistan on Sep. 5 in a crucial 2019 Asian Cup qualifier. Both matches will be played at Jalan Besar Stadium.

With 14 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Home United this year, Faris has yet to replicate that sparkling form while on national duty.

Since making his Singapore debut in a 0-0 draw against Hong Kong in Sep. 2014, the 24-year-old has recorded just four goals in 32 appearances.

In the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Chinese Taipei at Jalan Besar in June, he cut a subdued figure, and was subbed off for Hafiz Sujad early in the second half.

Faris believes the disparity in form comes down to fulfilling a vastly different role than at club level.

"Obviously it's totally different when I'm playing for Home, and when I'm playing for Singapore," he told ESPN FC. "For Home, I'm playing in the support striker's position. While for Singapore I'm playing as a left winger.

"[Home] coach Aidil [Sharin] and [Singapore] coach Sundram [V. Sundramoorthy] are two different coaches, with two different set of tactics, so I cannot compare between both."

Nonetheless, the former LionsXII man admits he needs to up the ante on the international stage, with Singapore lying bottom of Group E with just one point from their opening two matches on the road to United Arab Emirates.

Only the top two teams of the group will progress into the Asian Cup finals in 2019.

After starting off with a commendable 0-0 away draw against Bahrain in March, they were swiftly brought back down to earth and humbled by Chinese Taipei three months later.

"Of course, I want to contribute more to help the team," Faris said. "Whatever it is, as a player, you need to follow instructions.

"Whatever role they put me in, I will give my very best, and 110 percent to help the team win games. We as players can only do our best and if the tactics are right, everything will go smoothly.

"Everyone's been looking at the loss we had against Chinese Taipei, but now we need to move forward to the game against Turkmenistan. I know everyone's hoping for us to win every game, but sometimes luck is not on our side.

"It's a completely different prospect in this next game, but I'm sure coach Sundram and [assistant] coach Fandi [Ahmad] will have something up their sleeves. We'll definitely try to go for the win."

Needing nothing less than three points to reignite their qualification hopes, Faris hopes that the fans will turn up in full force to pack the 6,500-capacity Jalan Besar Stadium.

"The fans' support is really important for us," he explained. "Playing for club and country in some crucial matches throughout the years, I know how much their support gives us a morale boost on the pitch.

"When we're tired, we'll still keep on running and give our best for the team. I really hope it will be a full stadium to cheer us on for this important game."
