TOP STORY: Man United to beat Juve to Benfica youngster?

Manchester United have been in Portugal of late to watch Benfica youngster Ruben Dias as they search for defensive reinforcements amid a mini crisis at Old Trafford.

Calciomercato reports that United scouts are assessing whether or not the 22-year-old defender, who has 13 appearances with Portugal's senior team, could help them fill the void left in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backline by the injured Eric Bailly. The Ivorian picked up a knee injury during United's match against Tottenham in the International Champions Cup in July.

Minor surgery has sidelined Bailly since then, with the injury highlighting a threadbare group of reserves in defence for United despite the summer acquisition of Harry Maguire from Leicester.

The Old Trafford outfit will have to be aggressive once the window opens in January, though, with Calciomercato also reporting that Serie A champions Juventus are also keeping tabs on Dias.

18.25 BST: The Express writes that Glasgow giants Rangers' interest in former Juventus midifielder Claudio Marchisio was scuppered by the 33-year-old's wage demands.

16.38 BST: Virgil van Dijk is being tracked by Real Madrid and Barcelona, but why on earth would he want to leave Liverpool?

15.45 BST: Serie A side AC Milan could be set for a takeover as the world's second-richest man Bernard Arnault is reportedly preparing a £890m bid.

However, the Louis Vuitton owner's company released a statement which read: "The LVMH Group firmly and officially denies reports that LVMH has presented to the Elliott Fund an offer to buy the football club of AC Milan."

15.23 BST: West Ham United could have signed Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati (see below) but they could have also had Ajax and Netherlands defender Joel Veltman.

Veltman, 27, told NOS that he wanted to move to London this summer but the Dutch champions wouldn't let him go.

14.47 BST: Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has suggested he could finish his career in MLS once he leaves London. The 32-year-old has three years left on his Spurs contract but America could be calling.

"I do not think I'm going to finish [my career] at Tottenham. I still have a few years ahead of me. In any case, I will do everything to make the most of it.," Lloris told France Football. "You also have to know when to say stop at the right time, but I'm not against the idea of discovering something new. That could be the United States. I could finish over there, we'll see.

"I never really opened the doors [to the idea of leaving Tottenham] because I felt like I was happy where I was. It's not a lack of ambition on my part, it's just that I'm part of a project and every year I've seen the progress to reinforce my decision.

"If tomorrow I felt there was a regression, certainly I'd then ask the question [about leaving]."

13.45 BST: Real Madrid midfielder Isco looks like he might be on the move in January, despite Zinedine Zidane's arrival back at the Bernabeu.

The 27-year-old has only started one game in La Liga this season for Real so far and Juventus are monitoring with great interest, says Calciomercato.

A €70m bid would probably be enough for a team to capture him, but Juve would have to sell Paulo Dybala or someone else before they could afford that.

13.18 BST: Kosovo forward Vedat Muriqi is being scouted by both Tottenham and Manchester United, according to reports in Turkey.

Muriqi, 25, has scored twice in three games for Fenerbahce this season, but NTV report that his below-par performance for the club in the defeat to Super Lig leaders Alanyaspor was because of the growing interest in him.

12.07 BST: German newspaper Bild reports that Real Madrid still want to sign Paul Pogba and are set to make an offer of £18m plus Toni Kroos for the 26-year-old in January.

United are reportedly keen on Kroos, who recently signed a new deal until the summer of 2023, so that may help the negotiations. But one imagines they'll want a bit more than £18m.

11.22 BST: Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is out of contract next summer and clubs are already circling given his lack of game-time this season.

Serie A sides have got very excited with Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus all keen according to Calciomercato. And Borussia Dortmund are also in the mix.

10.32 BST: Qatari club Al Gharafa still have until Sept. 30 to make signings and they have targeted Everton striker Cenk Tosun, according to Sky.

Tosun, 28, has fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of Moise Kean from Juventus and although the Turkey international reportedly turned down moves to the Super Lig in the summer, he could yet move on.

09.47 BST: Martin Odegaard has made an impressive start to life at Real Sociedad but says his aim remains to succeed at Real Madrid.

The Norwegian midfielder has spoken to TV2 about his decision to continue playing on loan, having made just one appearance for the senior team since signing for the club in 2015.

"At the end of last season, I felt that it wouldn't be good for me to return to Madrid," the 20-year-old said. "In Madrid there are many great players and the competition is huge. It was obvious that the best thing for me was to ask to go out on loan again, which is something the club was also in agreement with. My aim is to play for Real Madrid. That is why I signed for them because I want to play there one day."

09.09 BST: Real Madrid, Sevilla, Nice and West Ham(!) were close to signing Barcelona starlet Ansu Fatu this summer before he finally committed to a new deal, says Mundo Deportivo.

Fati is now set to sign an even newer contract at Camp Nou following a stunning breakthrough into Ernesto Valverde's first team. The 16-year-old's contract at the Catalan giants expires in 2022, but Barca chiefs are keen to tie him down for even longer.

08.41 BST: Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea only signed a new contract after seeking assurances that the club was serious about competing for major honours once more, accord to The Times.

De Gea ended months of uncertainty over his future on Monday by signing a new United deal until at least 2023. Despite interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain and United's decline in the Premier League, the 28-year-old committed himself to Old Trafford that could see him tied to the club until 2024 due to the option to extend the contract by a further year.

However, The Times reports that the Spain international had to be convinced that United had the "ambition and direction" to challenge alongside Europe's other major clubs once more before he eventually agreed to the deal worth around £375,000 a week, which makes him the world's highest-paid goalkeeper.

08.15 BST: Willian has said he wants to extend his time at Chelsea by signing a new contract.

The 31-year-old's deal expires at the end of the season, meaning he can open talks with foreign clubs in January over a free transfer in the summer. However, the Brazil international insists his first priority is to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Daily Express quotes the attacking midfielder as saying: "From my side, I want to stay. I have one year left and I want to stay because I like to play for Chelsea.

"I love this club, I love to live in London and my family loves it here. I have been here six years already so everything is perfect for me. Of course there is more I want to do at Chelsea, win the Champions League!

"I want to win more titles here, I want to play more games, to score more goals so everything that I can do, I will try hard to do."

Napoli to move for Celtic ace

Serie A runners-up Napoli are plotting a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have been keeping tabs on the Frenchman for the past two years and have been impressed by his size, strength and stellar finishing since the 21-year-old made the switch to Celtic Park from PSG in August 2017.

Fellow Italian sides Atalanta and Sampdoria -- as well as Bundesliga big boys Borussia Dortmund -- are also rumoured to be interested in the France Under-21 international, who has started the season in blistering form, with 10 goals for club and country already this campaign.

A move for Edouard won't be cheap, however, with the SPL champions looking for a fee of about £30 million, which would more than triple the £9 million they paid to make his loan move from PSG permanent just over a year ago.

Mandzukic's Juve departure gets close

Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic is set to leave the Serie A champions imminently, and Calciomercato is claiming a deal is set to move one step closer in the very near future.

The Italian publication believes a meeting between Bianconeri chiefs and counterparts at Qatar-based Al Gharafa will take place on Tuesday morning, with the Qatar Stars League side set to make a €10 million offer for the World Cup runner-up with Croatia.

Last season, the 33-year-old made his fewest Juve appearances in a league campaign since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2015, and with the Old Lady looking to balance the books to continue funding the wages of Cristiano Ronaldo, it now looks like he will be moved on.

Should Mandzukic make the move, he is set to pocket a tidy €6 million a year.

Many fans believe the post is a subtle hint regarding a potential switch to Solskjaer's side, with ESPN FC sources reporting Maddison and fellow England international Jadon Sancho are top targets for the club.
