TOP STORY: Newcastle to compete with AC Milan for Asensio
AC Milan are set to face competition from Newcastle United to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, reports Calciomercato.
Asensio first joined Real Madrid from Mallorca in 2015 but now seems destined to leave the Bernabeu, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
One of the most heavily linked clubs have been AC Milan, who could lose star forward Rafael Leao to Chelsea next summer. The Serie A side are not going to have things all their own way over Asensio, though, and will need to shake off competition from Newcastle.
The 26-year-old has been struggling for meaningful game time, having managed just 104 minutes across nine appearances in all competitions so far this season.
The longest he's been on the pitch in one match for Los Blancos is the 26 minutes when he scored against RB Leipzig. Asensio came on in the 88th minute of Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Barcelona in Sunday's El Clasico.

21.27 BST: Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea are yet to reach an agreement on terms for a new contract with midfielder N'Golo Kante, with the club and player far apart in their expectations for a proposed deal. With the France international's current contract ending in the summer, there is a real possibility that he could leave Stamford Bridge as a free agent this summer, despite the 31-year-old's desire to remain in west London.
20.54 BST: Lazio will look to sign a striker in January following an injury to the talismanic Ciro Immobile, reports Gazzetta dello Sport. The lack of a natural frontman to replace him will likely lead them to the transfer market with a move for Francesco Caputo, who is now at Sampdoria, having been evaluated during the summer.
20.21 BST: VfB Stuttgart are hoping to persuade Alfred Schreuder to leave Ajax and take the vacant managerial role with the Bundesliga club, reports Kicker. It has been a week since Pellegrino Matarazzo departed, with it now being suggested that Stuttgart's search for the American's successor has become more concrete.
19.48 BST: In January, Barcelona will look to sign a midfield pivot who can be an alternative to Sergio Busquets, according to Mundo Deportivo. They won't look to recall Nico Gonzalez from his Valencia loan as they don't see him playing that particular role, with Frenkie de Jong and Franck Kessie the likeliest members of the current squad to fill in if nobody arrives.
19.15 BST: Inter Milan are aiming to sign Borussia Monchengladbach left-back Ramy Bensebaini in the summer, reports Calciomercato. The Algeria international's contract expires at the end of the season and the Nerazzurri are hoping to take advantage by bringing in the 27-year-old as a free agent.
18.58 BST: NJ/NY Gotham FC have announced that they have signed United States women's national team defender Taylor Smith to a new contract that will keep her with the NWSL side through the 2025 season. The 28-year-old former UCLA captain has spent seven seasons in the North American league, but joined Gotham just four months ago.

18.42 BST: Aston Villa will make an ambitious attempt to persuade Mauricio Pochettino to go back into management, reports the Telegraph, with coach Steven Gerrard facing a pivotal week. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss hasn't had a club since parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain in July.
18.09 BST: Atletico Madrid are in talks to extend the contract of captain and midfielder Koke, reports Ekrem Konur, with the Atleti lifer's deal expiring in 2024. Both parties are optimistic that they will soon be able to come to an agreement for the 30-year-old to extend that stay.
17.36 BST: Monza striker Andrea Petagna is Torino's priority as they aim to bolster their attack in January, reports Calciomercato. The second choice is Eldor Shomurodov of AS Roma, while there is no chance of Dnipro-1's Artem Dovbyk joining in the winter, although a summer move could be evaluated.
17.03 BST: Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who is in line to win the Ballon d'Or, will soon have a new deal with the Spanish champions. The France international's new contract will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium until the summer of 2024.

15.31 BST: Juventus forward Moise Kean could be set to leave the club in January, according to Calciomercato.
Kean, 22, is on a two-year loan spell from Everton which will turn permanent for €30m if he stays until the end of the season.
The Italy international has not scored in 13 games so far this campaign and is currently out of favour, so Juve could opt to end things early.
14.40 BST: Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil football star Neymar and eight others went on trial in Barcelona on Monday charged with fraud and corruption over the player's transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.
Neymar, who arrived in the city early Monday, spent about two hours at the Barcelona courthouse before he was excused by the judge from the rest of the day's session. He is scheduled to testify on Friday.
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison term and a €10 million ($9.8 million) fine for Neymar. They are also seeking a five-year jail term for former Barca president Sandro Rosell and an €8.4m fine for the club.
The case centres on the claim made by Brazilian investment firm DIS, which owned 40% of Neymar's economic rights when he was at Santos, that it lost out on its rightful cut from the player's transfer because the value of the deal was understated.
13.39 BST: Luke Shaw has said the days of having guaranteed starters at Manchester United are over because manager Erik ten Hag is not afraid to drop his star names.
Shaw, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo have all been dropped at different points this season -- something Shaw said might not have happened under previous managers.
And after the 0-0 draw with Newcastle on Sunday, the England left-back has reminded the squad that Ten Hag will not be afraid to mix up his team for Tottenham's visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday.
"The good thing with this manager, this gaffer, is that if you're not playing well then you won't play," Shaw said. "In the past that's not been the case but I think the good thing about this manager is that he's keeping everyone on their toes. He makes sure that everyone is 100% every day. If you're not at it then you won't play. That's a positive thing."
12.45 BST: It's not rocket science, but Chelsea are reportedly planning to terminate the loan of Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria in January, according to Calciomercato.
Zakaria, 25, joined on deadline day but has yet to play a minute of first-team football after Thomas Tuchel was sacked and replaced by Graham Potter.
The Switzerland international signed for a reported loan fee of €3m, plus €1m in add-ons, while Chelsea hold the option to make the move permanent for €28m plus €5m add-ons.
12.22 BST: Tottenham could look to bring Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin back to the club, reports The Sun.
Cirkin, 20, came through the ranks at Tottenham and played in the academy, but moved to Sunderland on a permanent deal in August 2021 and has made his mark up north.
Brentford are also keen and reportedly see the England U20 international as a potential replacement for Rico Henry.
11.40 BST: Brighton midfielder Leandro Trossard is of interest to Chelsea and Newcastle, according to 90min.
Trossard, 27, has had a fine season and new Chelsea boss Graham Potter is keen on reuniting with the Belgium international.
Brighton want to sign Trossard to a new contract, with his current terms expiring in 2024, but the club's former sporting director Dan Ashworth (now in a position at Newcastle) is also pushing to make a move.

10.14 BST: Ajax are among the clubs monitoring Valencia left-back Toni Lato, according to Superdeporte.
Lato, 24, becomes a free agent next summer and has not yet signed a new deal with Valencia.
Valencia coach Gennaro Gattuso wants Lato to stay and is hopeful the club will offer the defender, who has made eight appearances this season, a new deal in the coming weeks.
09.35 BST: Manchester United will activate an extension in Diogo Dalot's contract to ward off interest from Barcelona, sources told ESPN. Dalot is into the final year of the deal he signed after joining from Porto in 2018 but United have an option to extend his stay until 2024.
Barcelona are one of a number of clubs monitoring his situation, but the 23-year-old will not be available on a free transfer next summer.
Dalot has established himself at the first-choice right-back since Erik ten Hag's arrival as manager, playing 11 games in all competitions so far this season. The Portugal international is into his fifth season at Old Trafford and approaching 100 appearances for the club. He spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Milan but has since become a key part of the squad at United.
08.43 BST: Football Insider reports that Harry Kane is waiting to see if coach Antonio Conte will stay at Tottenham Hotspur before entering talks over a new contract.
Kane, 29, has a deal which runs until the summer of 2024, but Conte's contract expires at the end of this season. Securing Conte to a new deal will be seen as a sign of ambition, as the Italian will expect assurances of the club's future direction before committing.
Talks have not yet begun with the England captain, but having Conte signed up for the long-term may persuade the striker to extend his stay at the North London club.
08.00 BST: Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has denied that he wants to leave the club in January, saying he was surprised by the news.
"I never asked for my departure in January," Mbappe told reporters after PSG's 1-0 win over Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday. "The information that came out on the day of the [Champions League match against Benfica], I did not understand it. I am not involved in this information neither directly nor indirectly."
ESPN sources reported on Tuesday that the striker was fed up with unfulfilled promises by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and wanted to leave the capital as soon as possible.
"I was as shocked by this news as everyone else. People may think I'm involved, I'm not at all," Mbappe added. "I was taking a nap, my entourage was at my little brother's game. We were stunned when we found out.
"Afterwards, we had to deal with it, we had a match to play. I just wanted to say that it's completely false, I'm very happy here."

- AC Milan are set to meet with Rafael Leao's agent about a contract renewal and are keen to have discussions closed by the time the World Cup kicks off, reports Tuttosport. The winger's deal runs out in 2024, and the two parties are getting closer to reaching an agreement on wages, with Milan willing to guarantee him €6m per year, although there are also other factors to be sorted.
- Work is in progress to extend Mason Mount's contract -- per Fabrizio Romano, and Chelsea's owners, board and manager are all in agreement that doing so is a priority for the club. The England international has scored twice for Chelsea and provided a further three assists in all competitions this term, and his deal runs until the summer of 2024.
- Juventus will push for Moise Kean to leave the club, reports Calciomercato, due to the €30m redemption obligation for his loan spell from Everton. There has been loan interest from the Premier League in recent months, but they haven't been enough to convince the striker to leave.
- AC Milan want to sign Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek in January after being impressed by the 26-year-old, reports Calciomercato. The two clubs have a positive relationship and are set to come together to discuss various situations soon, with Milan most interested in Loftus-Cheek.
- Bodo/Glimt forward Ola Solbakken will join Roma very soon, according to Calciomercato, which adds that he has a total agreement with the Giallorossi ahead of moving as a free agent in January. They have been able to pull off the deal because Solbakken preferred joining up with Jose Mourinho rather than moving to Napoli.
