Selangor legend Mehmet Durakovic eyes Malaysia Cup glory for Perak

Australian coach Mehmet Durakovic is hoping to bring his own brand of Malaysia Cup magic to Perak when they begin their 2017 campaign against PKNS FC in Ipoh on Tuesday night.

The former Melbourne Victory boss, who took over at Perak in February, is the only foreigner to have won the Malaysia Cup as player and a coach.

He helped Selangor win their record 33rd Malaysia Cup crown in 2015, after a 10-year wait, and lifted the cup three consecutive times as a player with the Red Giants in the 1990s.

And his in-form Perak side are coming off their first win away to Kedah in eight years after a 3-2 victory in the Malaysia Super League last Saturday.

"The Malaysia Cup is one of the oldest competitions in the region and I have fond memories of winning it with Selangor," Durakovic told The Star.

"This is a prestigious tournament and I want to win it with Perak."

"The Malaysia Cup and Super League are the only silverware left for the season."

Durakovic, a decorated former Australia defender, earned 64 international caps between 1990 and 2002. He man-marked Diego Maradona when Australia faced Argentina in a playoff for the 1994 World Cup finals.

Perak are likely to be without midfielders Nasir Basharuddin and Mohd Hafiz Kamal, which will test their reserves against a PKNS side missing injured national striker Safee Sali.

"Nasir has high fever and Hafiz took a knock on his foot in the Kedah match. We will take a look at them [today] to see if they can play," Durakovic said.

"I may field our back-up players because I feel that a player like D. Kenny [Palraj] has the quality to make the team."

Perak last won the Malaysia Cup in 2000, and lost the 2007 final to Kedah by a thumping three goals to nil.
