Transfer Talk: Liverpool will have to pay for Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski

The transfer window for Europe's biggest clubs might be closed, but they are still working tirelessly behind the scenes to line up the arrival of their next star. So Transfer Talk has been scouring the world's media to see who could be heading to your club when Jan. 1 arrives.

TOP STORY: Reds target wants to stay in Naples

Liverpool have been linked with Napoli player Piotr Zielinski for some time, but the Reds look set to miss out on their transfer target, if Il Mattino are to be believed.

They believe the 24-year-old midfielder wants to sign a new contract with the Serie A club, and Napoli too are said to be keen on the Poland international remaining, although there is still hope for Liverpool and other interested clubs.

Zielinski's agent wants an €80 million release clause in the new contract, which could extend the deal until 2023. However, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis doesn't want a release clause in the contract at all, presumably wanting to push a future buyer for as much money as possible.

LIVE BLOG

23.23 GMT: That's going to do it for Monday's live edition of Transfer Talk. Thanks very much for joining us, and be sure to check back in a few short hours when we return with the latest gossip pulled from Tuesday's back pages.

22.17 GMT: Arsenal, Tottenham and Southamgpton have joined Everton in having interest in Red Bull Salzburg's 19-year-old Austrian attacker Hannes Wolf, according to the Mirror.

21.01 GMT: Manchester City starlet Brahim Diaz has agreed a £60,000-a-week deal with Real Madrid, who he could join for free in the summer, the Sun reports. Aware that they will lose the 19-year-old for nothing at the end of the season, the Premier League champions are preparing to do business and recoup some money from the Spain U21 international.

19.45 GMT: With minutes hard to come by at Chelsea this term, Andreas Christensen is said to be looking for pastures new come January. Enter AC Milan and Napoli, two clubs Calciomercato credits with interest in the Denmark international. The report states that Napoli could make the 22-year-old's exit worth Chile's while, reporting that the Italian club would be willing to release 24-year-old full-back Elseid Hysaj -- reportedly wanted by Maurizio Sarri in the summer -- in a swap deal.

<18.29 GMT: Cesar Azpilicueta has agreed a new long-term extension to his Chelsea contract that commits him to the club until at least June 2022, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC. Read the full story.

17.13 GMT: Claudio Ranieri is reportedly eyeing a former midfielder of his as his first signing at Fulham (no, not N'Golo Kante).

Jeunes Footeux write that they hold an interest in Valentin Rongier, with Fulham already preparing a €25m bid.

16.44 GMT: Could Nathaniel Clyne be returning to Crystal Palace? Calciomercato write that Roy Hodgson's side are interested in bringing him back to Selhurst Park, but Fulham are also interested in signing the Liverpool defender.

16.09 GMT: On-loan James Rodriguez has said he could be ready to leave Bayern Munich in search of more regular game time.

"It's a different situation to last year because I'm playing less," he said. "If I need to leave because of a lack of minutes I will.

"But I would like to stay because I feel love from all the fans and the Bayern family."

15.21 GMT: Valery Fernandez has signed a new contract with Girona, which will keep him at the club until 2023.

14.41 GMT: Manchester United may face competition to sign defender Eder Militao, with the Daily Mail reporting Chelsea are also interested.

14.04 GMT: A report in The Sun suggests West Ham and Crystal Palace are ready to go head-to-head in a £20m battle for Blackburn's Bradley Dack.

Dack signed from Gillingham in the summer and has nine goals so far this season in the Championship.

13.35 GMT: After several reports claimed otherwise, Telefoot report that Neymar does not have a release clause in his Paris Saint-Germain contract.

Previous reports had said that a €200 million clause existed in his deal.

12.57 GMT: Must be a day for links to early teenage players. Birmingham City attacker Romello Mitchell, 15, is being tracked by Liverpool and Manchester United, say the Birmingham Mail. He scored a brace in Birmingham's U16 cup final victory over Liverpool last month, so no wonder he's on their radar.

12.23 GMT: The Evening Standard report that Chelsea have made an official approach to Borussia Dortmund to sign Christian Pulisic.

The United States international reportedly met with the club on Friday, with Dortmund wanting around £70m for the winger. But Chelsea's bid was apparently a fair bit lower than that.

11.56 GMT: Tottenham fans, we know it's not been an easy weekend for you, but prepare to get slightly excited. Borussia Dortmund 's 14-year-old attacking gem Youssoufa Moukoko, who has scored 64 goals in just 42 appearances for Dortmund's under-17 team since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, has been doing a live Q&A on Instagram.

Q: Who is your dream partner in attack?

A: Click picture, open file and start writing: German-based wunderkind dreams of Spurs move...

For now, Moukoko remains under contract at Dortmund until 2021. But he could make his senior debut in the Bundesliga at the age of 16 with an exception permit from the German FA. So watch this space.

11.24 GMT: AC Milan won't be signing Gonzalo Higuain on a permanent deal at the end of the season, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Seven goals in 14 games hasn't been enough to convince Milan to trigger their option to buy but that leaves the Argentine striker in a tricky spot. He's already said he felt kicked out by Juventus when they signed Cristiano Ronaldo so we can't see him going back there.

Anyone keen on a feisty 30-year-old with a few good years left in him? West Ham? Anyone?

10.26 GMT: Everyone is asking the same thing: Where in the world is Mesut Ozil? Unai Emery doesn't know... but presumably wherever he is, he's in serious back pain after missing the Tottenham win with "back spasms."

Inter Milan are keen to track him down first so they can offer him an escape route, say the Daily Star. And with his £350,000-a-week wages to shift off the books, Arsenal might just drive him to San Siro themselves.

09.55 GMT: Well, apparently being 2-0 up against Manchester United and shipping two goals for a 2-2 draw is enough to get you sacked these days...

Mark Hughes is OUT at Southampton. Quique Sanchez Flores, Garry Monk, Brendan Rodgers and Sam Allardyce are some of the names in the frame.

09.07 GMT: Barcelona have been tracking PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot and RMC reports that new contract negotiations have broken down, so that suggests a move may be in the offing come January.

08.44 GMT: Hopefully we'll be seeing Arjen Robben cutting inside onto his left foot to score for another club soon.

08.30 GMT: AC Milan's Paulo Maldini (sporting strategy and development director) was asked about signing Cesc Fabregas and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"We've got our ideas, which is normal since it's already December," he told Sky Italia. "We want to do everything we can to finish in the top four and if we can do it [sign Fabregas/Ibra], then we will, but we're also happy with the squad we've got. There are several players whose contracts are up for renewal who are showing great professionalism."

PAPER TALK (by Mark Thompson, Football Whispers)

Arsenal 'Under' his spell?

Arsenal scouts were in Rome to watch Turkish star Cengiz Under against Inter Milan, says Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira.

And the Gunners would have been impressed by what they saw as Under scored a magnificent 30-yard strike in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

It was the 21-year-old's second goal for Roma in Serie A this season and his 11th for the club since joining from Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir in 2017. Schira also indicates that Monchi, Roma's sporting director, would be willing to sell the youngster for €50m.

Rabiot raging

Adrien Rabiot's pending departure from Paris Saint-Germain looks increasingly likely, with Paris United reporting that his relationship with manager Thomas Tuchel has deteriorated further. A clash between the pair reportedly took place when the 23-year-old learned that he wouldn't feature against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Rabiot is still holding off on signing a new contract with PSG, with his current deal expiring in the summer. However, the PSG hierarchy are split on what to do with him. Sporting director Antero Henrique would be willing to sell him for €10m-€15m in January, according to reports, with that looking like the only way Les Parisiens will be able to get any money out of him.

However, club president Nasser al-Khelaifi is still to be convinced that this would be the best approach, and still wants to try to negotiate one more time with Rabiot and his entourage.

Pogba: A winter 'virus'

The saga of Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba goes on, with the latest revelation coming from the Daily Record. Angry after United's draw with Southampton, Mourinho is said to have given Pogba a dressing -down and then some, calling the France World Cup winner a "virus" in front of the rest of the team.

"You don't play. You don't respect players and supporters. And you kill the mentality of the good honest people around you," Mourinho is also believed to have said.

Winter's the time of year when viruses start to spread -- will the Portuguese be popping down the pharmacy to try to get rid of this one, or will he try to take more drastic action?

Football Whispers' Emerging Whispers

The possibility that transfer rumours happen is given a score out of 5, based on Football Whispers' transfer algorithm.

Houssem Aouar to Arsenal: 2.6

The entirety of the Premier League could do with a way to catch Manchester City, so why not buy all of Lyon's players? Arsenal are the latest team to be interested in Houssem Aouar, according to L'Equipe, as they search for a long-term replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

Aaron Ramsey to Real Madrid: 2.4

Speaking of Aaron Ramsey, several sources have reported the Champions League holders are interested in the Welshman. With Ramsey's contract expiring, he could sign a pre-contract agreement in January, or Arsenal could decide to cash in and sell him before he becomes a free agent.

Miralem Pjanic to Manchester United: 2.3

Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Juventus has not pleased everyone. According to Diario Gol, Miralem Pjanic is tired of Ronaldo's ego and wants to leave. United, who have shown interest in the Bosnian, could take advantage of the situation that their former player has created and swoop for the midfielder.

Jordan Pickford to Manchester United: 2.0

The Mirror reported Sunday that United were ready to spend £70m on the Everton goalkeeper if David De Gea departs Old Trafford. Maybe his performance in the Merseyside derby -- where the England international's late blunder gifted Liverpool the win -- will make them think again ...

Nathaniel Clyne to Fulham: 2.0

Fulham are the latest team to join the race for Nathaniel Clyne's signature, according to the Sun, with Claudio Ranieri enquiring about a loan until the end of the season. They join Cardiff and Leicester in interest for the 27-year-old, but Clyne is said to be interested in a move to London.
