Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic to miss rest of season with thrombosis

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a thrombosis in his arm.

Subotic, 27, has been a regular in the Dortmund side of late but will not play again for the club for the remainder of the campaign.

He will not be permitted to take part in any contact sport while he recovers and will instead be given an individual training regime.

A club statement read: "Bitter news for Borussia Dortmund and Neven Subotic: the central defender, who gave seven convincing performances both nationally and internationally for BVB in the second half of this season, will miss the rest of the 2015-16 season.

"The defender, who has been with Dortmund since 2008, cannot take part in any contact sport due a thrombosis. Instead he will have individual training sessions."

Subotic told Dortmund's official website that he is looking forward to returning to the fold stronger than ever.

"Under the circumstances I am doing relatively well," Subotic said. "I can stay fit with individual training and when I have recuperated again I will be in better physical condition than ever before."

Following the news, Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has announced that he is to promote Slovenian Jon Gorenc Stankovic from the club's under-23 side.

Stankovic, 20, who joined Dortmund in 2014, has previously been named in the Europa League squad this season and also was part of the club's preseason tour to Asia.
