Dortmund give goalkeeper Roman Burki contract extension

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki has signed a contract extension until 2021, the Bundesliga league leaders announced on Friday.

Switzerland international Burki, 26, has made 68 Bundesliga appearances for BVB since his move from Freiburg in 2015.

"Roman fits in excellently at Borussia Dortmund, both on a sporting level and as a person," sporting director Michael Zorc said.

Burki played in Thomas Tuchel's DFB Pokal winning side in May, but has been criticised for his performances in this season's Champions League. In midweek, he made a glaring error in the 1-1 draw with Apoel Nicosia.

Burki's contract extension follows on the back of reports linking Cologne keeper Timo Horn and Paris Saint-Germain's Kevin Trapp with a Dortmund move. Moreover, Zorc has backed the under-pressure Burki to come through his current troubles.

"We like his playing style and see a great potential to develop in him. We are sure that he will soon be able to consistently produce what he is capable of," he said.

Meanwhile, Burki commented: "I am very pleased that Borussia Dortmund have placed their faith in me in what is definitely a difficult phase for me personally. I am very happy and proud to keep goal for this excellent team -- which I subject everything to."
