Borussia Dortmund's Sebastian Rode to miss rest of season after surgery

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Rode is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing groin surgery.

Rode joined Dortmund from Bayern Munich for a reported €12 million in 2016, but has so far made just 22 appearances with only one coming this season.

He has been sidelined since early August with persistent groin problems and underwent surgery on Wednesday.

"All conservative [treatment] means had been exhausted," Rode wrote on Twitter. "I have now made the decision to undergo an operation, which will prematurely end what has been a completely disrupted season for me."

The 27-year-old vowed that he would "not give up" and said he would "remain optimistic and work hard towards my comeback."

He added that he would keep his fingers crossed for his teammates as they try to overcome a 2-1 deficit in their Europa League match at Salzburg on Thursday.
