Swiss striker Josip Drmic signs with Borussia Monchenglabach

Striker Josip Drmic has signed a contract with Borussia Monchengladbach that will keep him at the club until 2019.

The 22-year-old striker joins the club from Leverkusen, where he scored 6 goals in 25 Bundesliga matches last season.

The transfer fee is reported to be around €10 million.

"We wanted to sign Josip Drmic last year but he opted for Leverkusen. We are very happy, things worked out this time," Borussia director of sports Max Eberl said of the signing Wednesday. "He is a very agile, goal-hungry striker that will fit great into our team."

With Drmic, Gladbach hopes to fill the gap left behind by Max Kruse, who joined Wolfsburg in May.

"I had several reasons to make this move, but I don't want to name them all," Drmic said on the club's website. "I am just happy to be at Monchengladbach now and that all parties involved are happy with the transfer. I don't want to look back and think only about the hopefully bright future at Borussia."

The transfer is the Swiss international's third within the past three years.

In 2013, Drmic joined FC Nuremberg, but despite scoring 17 goals he could not help the club avoid relegation.

Last summer, Drmic went to Leverkusen, where he never managed to permanently break into the starting eleven, starting just five games.

Drmic will join with his Swiss teammates Yann Sommer and Granit Xhaka at Gladbach.

"They are my friends," he said of the reunion. "Of course I talked to them before making a decision. But now I hope to make new friends within the team."

When asked about his goals at the new club, Drmic highlighted playing time and the opportunity to compete in Europe.

"I want to play as much as possible and be successful both on national and European level. It is great that the team qualified for the Champions League and has the opportunity to compete on the highest level with Europe's top teams," he said.

"I don't like it that much to judge myself," said Drmic when asked about his qualities on the pitch.

"I am a quick striker, who likes to go deep but also want to take part in the passing combinations. And of course I want to score goals! But the main thing is to get along well with my teammates and that we are successful together."
