Burnley's Tom Heaton faces long spell out after shoulder surgery - Dyche

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton has had surgery on a dislocated shoulder and is likely to be out for months, manager Sean Dyche has said.

Heaton, 31, who has been capped three times by England, suffered the injury after landing awkwardly during the first half of the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

He underwent surgery on Wednesday and Dyche told a news conference on Thursday: "It won't be weeks, it will be a longer period.

"It [the surgery] was successful in its immediacy. I'm told that went very well.

"Tom was good afterwards -- I haven't spoken to him yet as he was a bit groggy last night -- but the physio's kept me informed."

He said there "will not be any thought" about rushing the goalkeeper back and added: "You know there will be a slightly lesser period for an outfield player -- for keepers, they are constantly landing on their shoulders, so common sense says it's even more reason to make sure it's 100 percent right.

"The early signs are very good -- we're very happy with the surgery."

In Heaton's absence, former Charlton stopper Nick Pope, 25, made his Premier League debut last weekend and is expected to continue as Dyche's starting goalkeeper.

"He delivered a very, very good performance [against Palace] in a tough game, an awkward game for us," the manager said.

"He's got a chance to continue and show what he can do. That's a great opportunity for him."
