New Zealand international Jeremy Brockie scored for Mamelodi Sundowns as they claimed a 2-0 victory away at Equatorial Guinea side Leones Vegetarianos in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie on Wednesday.

Translated as 'Vegetarian Lions', the Guinea side proved easy meat for Sundowns as Themba Zwane added a to make them overwhelming favourites to advance to the next stage.

The 2016 winners never looked troubled, and should have won by a greater margin but for some bad luck and wasteful finishing.

Fellow South African side Orlando Pirates, making a return to the Champions League for the first time since they appeared in the final in 2013, brushed aside LightStars from the Seychelles 5-1, though they were shocked by an early goal in Soweto.

Mario Ravo put the visitors in front on 16 minutes, but Pirates seized control after that.

Thabo Qalinge equalized, Zambia'a Augustine Mulenga put them in front and captain for the night Mpho Makola scored a superb free-kick to give the home side a 3-1 halftime lead.

They did have to wait until injury-time at the end of the game to score again, but Justin Shonga and Linda Mntambo added two more to their tally.

This year's beaten semi-finalists Primeiro de Agosto survived a score when they went 2-0 down at home to Otoho d'Oyo from Congo, but roared back to win 4-2 thanks to a brace from Geraldo.

They will still face a difficult away trip next week for the return leg, but it could have been much worse.

Tunisian side Club Africain were held 0-0 by APR in Rwanda, while Egypt's Ismaily won 1-0 against Le Messager Ngozi from Burundi as Tarik Taha netted.

Zambian side Nkana claimed a solid 2-1 away win against UD Songo from Mozambique as Harrison Chisala and Festus Mbewe were on target.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Kaizer Chiefs made heavy weather of their match against Zambia's Zimamoto, but finally ran out 4-0 winners with Khama Billiat grabbing a hat-trick.

Kabelo Mahlasela also got on the scoresheet for his first Chiefs goal, and while it is hard to argue with such a convincing win, the team looked below-par for much of the contest.

Al-Ittihad trounced Miracle Club of Comoros 8-0, with Libya international Mohamed Zubya scoring four times, while DC Motema Pembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo were 4-1 winners over Anges de Fatima of the Central African Republic as Nigerian forward Peter Kolawole struck twice.

Enugu Rangers from Nigeria beat Ethiopian side Defence Force 2-0, while Green Buffaloes of Zambia defeated Al Merreikh Juba from South Sudan by the same scoreline.
