Chicago Fire interest in Panathinaikos forward Marcus Berg - sources

The Chicago Fire are in pursuit of Sweden international and Panathinaikos forward Marcus Berg, multiple sources have told ESPN FC.

The Fire are also reported to be lining up Hungarian striker Nemanja Nikolic, and one source said that Nikolic remains the team's first choice, and that Berg is an alternative in case the Nikolic deal falls through.

The source made it clear that Chicago would be signing either Nikolic or Berg -- but not both -- and that the player that signs will do so as a Designated Player.

Berg, 30, is currently in his fourth season with Panathinaikos, scoring 73 goals in 126 league and cup appearances. Berg has also spent time with Goteborg, Groningen, Hamburg and PSV Eindhoven.

At international level, the Torsby native has scored 11 goals in 44 appearances.

The Fire are in dire need of attacking help. Chicago scored 42 goals in 34 regular season matches in 2016, which tied it for the fourth lowest mark in MLS.
