Since joining Milan back in 2012, Nigel de Jong has established himself as one of the club's most consistent and dependable players, particularly during a spell in which they have struggled. As a result, talk of a contract renewal this week is a deserved reward for the Dutchman's performances.

The 29-year-old has been a fundamental part of the midfield throughout his time at the San Siro, whether that has been as a defensive enforcer or the holding player tasked with setting the tempo of the game. De Jong's leadership, technical ability and reading of the game have undoubtedly ensured that he is regarded as one of the best in his position, and he has played a significant role in keeping Milan competitive.

As the Rossoneri changed system and personnel, Mark van Bommel initially was effective in the same role as the club secured the league title back in 2011. However, after his there was a significant gap to fill, and De Jong has seamlessly stepped in.

Milan were widely criticised for Andrea Pirlo's exit, and they have been made to regret it given his success in Turin and continued ability to control games despite his advanced years.

Nevertheless, the club made a clear shift toward playing with a deeper-lying midfielder with different characteristics that suited their new system. It placed an emphasis on being able to protect the defensive line and add solidity in order to allow others to flourish in the attacking phase.

While the likes of Stephan El Shaarawy and Mario Balotelli received the plaudits for their influential performances over the past two years, de Jong has largely escaped the headlines due to the nature of his game.

However, given his commitment, desire and sacrifice for this team, he is undeniably one of the unsung heroes of this current squad, and securing his future is essential to future success under Pippo Inzaghi.

Ahead of the transfer deadline, it had been reported that Manchester United were interested in signing the midfielder. While that move failed to materialize, it is understood that de Jong will hold discussions with his agent and CEO Adriano Galliani in the coming weeks.

Given that his current deal expires in June, it is vital that a new contract is agreed upon as soon as possible, as it is feared that de Jong's contribution to this team could be made brutally clear in his absence. However, it is positive to hear suggestions that contract talks are in the offing.

Along with captain Riccardo Montolivo, de Jong's ability to control a game is crucial and unique in comparison to the other midfield options at Inzaghi's disposal. The Dutchman essentially can be regarded as the heartbeat and rock of Milan rolled into one, and it is hoped that he will remain so for years to come.
