Trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Munich, Bayern suffered their fifth straight Champions League exit to a La Liga side after a tumultuous 2-2 draw meant a heartbreaking 4-3 aggregate defeat against the holders Real Madrid.
Joshua Kimmich fired Bayern into a shock lead after only 164 seconds, before Karim Benzema restored parity seven minutes later. Benzema added his second 21 seconds into the second half, tapping into an empty net, following a howler from Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, before James Rodriguez levelled against his parent club.

Despite 21 shots on goal, Bayern will rue their profligacy, missing a hatful of chances and giving away another embarrassing "gift" of a goal to seal a fifth straight Champions League exit to a La Liga side. The Bavarians also conceded for the 13th European game in succession on away soil against Real, who didn't even need a certain Cristiano Ronaldo to find the net. That said, Real found a way to progress without Ronaldo's goals, while Jupp Heynckes' side will ponder Lewandowski's below-par displays and lack of punch, especially when the transfer merry-go-round opens in earnest after the World Cup.

GK Sven Ulreich, 5 -- It's a real shame but Ulreich has undone a lot of his good work this season with one high-profile mistake. Ulreich inexplicably wanted to pick up Tolisso's errant back pass immediately after the restart. However, seeing Benzema in the corner of his eye, he panicked and did neither, aiming a wild kick which left the French striker with the routine task of tapping home his second goal. Ironically, Manuel Neuer will probably be fit soon.
DF David Alaba, 7 -- Missed the first leg and the quarterfinals too with a nagging sciatic nerve problem but back to bolster Bayern's left flank. His 300th competitive game for the club was spoiled by leaving Benzema far too much room at the back post to equalise. Tried to repair his mistake with an energetic display and see a fierce strike tipped wide by Navas.
DF Niklas Sule, 8 -- Produced a barnstorming performance beyond his tender years, evidenced by his brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Ronaldo on 77 minutes. He helped set up the equaliser at 2-2, consummately making up for the absence of Jerome Boateng at the heart of Bayern's defence.
DF Mats Hummels, 8 -- A marvellous presence at the back, striding forward with graceful purpose set up a great chance spurned by Lewandowski. Always a threat from set plays too and kept Ronaldo quiet once again.
DF Joshua Kimmich, 8 -- While Ronaldo and Lewandowski failed to score over the two legs, Kimmich put Bayern into the lead in each game, this time firing in from close range after only 164 seconds. Kimmich has now scored seven Champions League goals in 28 games, already going seven better than his predecessor Philipp Lahm who failed to score in 112 games in the comp. He could have marked Marcelo tighter to prevent him crossing brilliantly for the equaliser and was last seen with a tear in his eye at the final whistle.
MF Corentin Tolisso, 5 -- Bayern's record signing fizzed a right footer past the post on the stroke of half time, and also brought out best in Navas with a snapshot with his last kick of the game before being subbed for Sandro Wagner on 74 minutes. While most will remember it as Ulreich's error, it was the France international who played the suicidal back pass which brought the hapless goalkeeper into the spotlight.
MF Thiago, 7 -- Much improved from the first leg and the ex-Barca midfielder was on the receiving end of a less than amorous welcome from the Madrid crowd.
MF Franck Ribery, 6 -- In tandem with Alaba, Ribery again proved a menace to Real on the left, especially in a bright first half. He faded in the second period and hasn't scored in the Champions League since March 2015.
MF James Rodriguez, 7 -- In the first year of a two-season loan at Bayern from Madrid, the Colombian missed from close range in the first half but did better from the angle to level at 2-2 on 63 minutes for his first Champions League goal for Bayern. He immediately refused to celebrate, almost apologising for his goal and made way for Martinez on 84 minutes after spurning further chances to really rub it in against his former club.
MF Thomas Muller, 6 - The captain set up Kimmich's goal to provide Bayern with a dream start. He toiled industriously throughout, Bayern's record Champions League scorer never looked like adding to his tally of 42 goals.
FW Robert Lewandowski, 5 -- Another off-colour performance with his best chances snuffed out by the outstanding Keylor Navas in the Madrid goal.
Substitutes
FW Sandro Wagner, NR -- Came on for Tolisso to provide a nuisance factor for the last 16 minutes.
MF Javi Martinez, NR -- Replaced the tiring James, playing more as an emergency striker for the final six minutes plus added time.
