Iheanacho and Sane among City stars hoping to impress Guardiola in derby

The EFL Cup gives some Manchester City players the chance to impress Pep Guardiola against rivals Manchester United.

Here's five who could do with catching his eye:

Kelechi Iheanacho

Guardiola has played Iheanacho and Sergio Aguero together for just 80 minutes this season with the City boss opting for just one striker or none at all, as was the case in the 4-0 Champions League embarrassment against Barcelona. Iheanacho has four goals this season but needs game time to maintain his development and to keep Aguero under pressure, particularly with another striker, Gabriel Jesus, arriving in January.

Leroy Sane

The £37m signing missed the first month of the season with a hamstring injury and couldn't force his way into a side that won their opening 10 games of the season. Sane has started City's last two Premier League games and has shown the electric pace and skill that made him a top target for Guardiola in the summer. But with Nolito and Raheem Sterling starting the campaign in great form, the Germany international needs more minutes to show his quality.

Aleix Garcia

The academy youngster looked hugely impressive in City's third round victory at Swansea City. Guardiola is short of options in the centre of midfield with Yaya banished until his agent apologises, Fabian Delph struggling with injury and Fernando making just one Premier League start and not impressing in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham. The City boss is a fan of Garcia and the 19-year-old can take the opportunity to show he's ready for more first team action.

Willy Caballero

Guardiola insists he won't change his plans for goalkeepers to be ball-playing sweepers and while Caballero has tried to embrace the new system, it hasn't always gone to plan. He made a couple of dreadful clearances in his last performance against Swansea but it's important he plays as he is set to start the Champions League match against Barcelona next week as Claudio Bravo serves a one-game ban.

Pablo Maffeo

Right-back has been a problem area for City this season and both Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta are currently injured. Guardiola has opted for a back three in the last two Premier League games but his side have failed to keep a clean sheet in either match. Maffeo could be the solution at right-back. The 19-year-old Spaniard has started just one game this season, the 1-0 Champions League victory over Steaua Bucharest, but is ready to stake a claim to become a regular option for Guardiola.
