David Silva pulls strings with 8/10 as Manchester City dominate Shakhtar

Manchester City's Champions League campaign is back on track as they moved top of Group F with a dominant 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian champions had never been beaten at home by an English side before, but couldn't cope with City, who won with goals from David Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva.

Positives

City's shock defeat to French side Lyon in their Champions League seems an aberration as they put on a commanding performance of quality and composure. The result was never in doubt once Silva had opened the scoring and, after a sticky start to the competition, they could now qualify for the knockout stage with a win in their next fixture when Shakhtar travel to the Etihad Stadium.

Negatives

There is little for Pep Guardiola to worry about at the moment as they regained control of Group F and barely put a foot wrong on what could have been a tricky evening. Perhaps his one concern maybe the lack of goals from Gabriel Jesus, who is struggling to put the difficulty of a disappointing World Cup with Brazil behind him.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- Guardiola may say that he's not sure whether City have what it takes to win the Champions League but his players showed that they might not agree. He was able to rotate his squad without any impact to their relentless style and having Kevin De Bruyne adds yet another weapon to his armoury.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Ederson, 6 -- He must be glad that this fixture came so early in the calendar rather than on a freezing Ukrainian winter's night as he spent the majority of the night as a spectator. But the Brazilian stayed alert enough to keep his clean sheet with a double save from the final attack of the game.

DF John Stones, 7 -- After a solid performance at right-back in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Burnley, Guardiola kept him there, giving Kyle Walker more time to recover from a minor thigh injury. He impressed again, keeping the dangerous Brazilian winger Ismaily quiet.

DF Nicolas Otamendi, 7 -- The Argentine has slipped down the pecking order in City's defence this season but hasn't let the side down when called upon. He didn't again, cruising through the evening and silencing the Ukrainian Premier League's leading scorer Junior Moraes.

DF Aymeric Laporte, 8 -- The January transfer window signing has emerged as a major influence in City's mean defence, which has conceded just once in the last seven games. He snuffed out any Shakhtar threat and capped a solid performance with a well-taken header.

DF Benjamin Mendy, 7 -- The rampaging left-back was making his first Champions League start since tearing apart Feyenoord more than a year ago and he made a similar impact. He looked to get forward at every opportunity, sent over his usual dangerous crosses and went close himself with a fierce 20-yard strike.

MF Fernandinho, 7 -- Back in Ukraine where he made his name in Europe, the Brazilian showed how much his game has developed under Guardiola. His movement and awareness were excellent as he linked the defence and attack in the crucial pivot role.

MF David Silva, 8 -- He scored the vital winner in the last Champions League game in Hoffenheim and showed his experience and calmness when he volleyed home the opener just when City were snatching at chances. The former Spain international has won every competition except the Champions League and is leading this season's challenge from the front.

MF Kevin De Bruyne, 6 -- Back for his first start of the season after a knee ligament injury. Not quite at his best yet, but he is still a quicker thinker than anyone else on the pitch and was a constant worry to the Shakhtar defence.

FW Riyad Mahrez, 7 -- The Algerian winger is looking more comfortable in the City side with each passing game following his club record move in the summer. The only disappointment was that he squandered two good opportunities with the game still goalless.

FW Gabriel Jesus, 6 -- He was given a start ahead of Sergio Aguero and led the line effectively. But the striker is in desperate need of a goal to rebuild his confidence and was too often caught offside as he tried to push the issue.

FW Raheem Sterling, 8 -- He is starting more games from the left-hand side and is relishing in the role, with his ability to cut inside and shoot. He has also developed a strong relationship with Mendy, working in tandem both offensively and defensively.

Substitutes

MF Bernardo Silva, 7 -- With De Bruyne returning, he was given a break after his impressive start to the season. He was introduced for the final 20 minutes and took fewer than one of them to make an impact with a neat finish.

DF Kyle Walker, N/R -- The England defender was given a brief run-out with one eye on City's Premier League visit to his former club Spurs on Monday.

MF Phil Foden, N/R -- More minutes for the 18-year-old at the venue where he made his Champions League debut.
