Mexico Hot List: Rodolfo Pizarro emerges as game-changer for Chivas

Although a spot in the next World Cup has yet to be clinched by Mexico's national team, it wouldn't be surprising if manager Juan Carlos Osorio is already narrowing down his roster considerations. While certain names such as Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Hector Moreno already seem to have a place in Russia 2018 guaranteed, countless others are battling to gain recognition.

Keeping in mind that the next World Cup qualifiers are set for early September, here are the latest best and worst performances from those vying for a spot in Mexico's roster.

Warming Up

Rodolfo Pizarro, MF, Chivas (Mexico)

Why he's here: Pizarro has recently emerged as a game-changer for Chivas. One week after scoring an equalizer in the 1-1 draw against Cruz Azul, the 23-year-old later provided a goal and assist during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Necaxa.

What this means: Following a disappointing run in the Gold Cup, this form is good news for the fringe national team player. Despite the fact that Pizarro still needs to fine-tune his decision-making, the promising midfielder will likely earn another chance to shine for Mexico next month.

Raul Jimenez, FW, Benfica (Portugal)

Why he's here: Over the weekend, Jimenez helped Benfica secure the 2017 Portuguese Super Cup. After stepping onto the field as a substitute late into the second half, the striker quickly scored a goal in the 83rd minute of the 3-1 victory.

What this means: As long as he continues to be a key player for a major club abroad, a spot in the national team roster is nearly always assured. This season, what is perhaps more important for him is acquiring a starting role for the Portuguese giants. If he can avoid injuries, there's a decent chance we will be hearing much more about Jimenez during the next several months.

Paul Aguilar, DF, Club America (Mexico)

Why he's here: Slowly but surely, the recently recovered right-back is regaining his noteworthy abilities. During Saturday's 2-1 win over Pumas, Aguilar stood out with his tackles and high-pressing runs down the right flank. Two weeks ago, the 31-year-old also provided an assist in the 2-0 victory against Pachuca.

What this means: Will he make a return to the national team in the near future? After seeing a number of defensive problems for Mexico over the summer, the reincorporation of Aguilar is exactly what El Tri needs. Keep an eye on the veteran who might be in the next round of call-ups.

Cooling Down

Alan Mendoza, DF, Pumas (Mexico)

Why he's here: Once an intriguing option to consider for Mexico, Mendoza is now an underwhelming member of Pumas' roster. After two less-than-exciting starts for his squad, the left-back was later benched in Saturday's loss to America.

What this means: A backup place in a Liga MX club won't do much to help garner Osorio's attention. Before the 23-year-old potentially makes his national team debut, he will first need to provide consistent and reliable performances as a starter for Pumas.

Carlos Pena, MF, Rangers (Scotland)

Why he's here: On Sunday, the former Chivas player was left on the bench for Rangers in the 2-1 win over Motherwell. While fellow Mexican Eduardo Herrera has quickly earned minutes for the Scottish side, Pena is still in need of more time to adjust to his new role abroad.

What this means: Recently, Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha stated that Pena "needs to get fitter," which means it might take a while before he makes his league debut. The move to Scotland was undoubtedly a risk, and unfortunately for the midfielder, it might be one that will continue to push him away from El Tri relevance.

Leonel Lopez, MF, Leon (Mexico)

Why he's here: In late 2016 and early 2017, Lopez caught the eye of many Liga MX fans with his clever passing and technical abilities. Since then, the 23-year-old has gradually lost his starting role with Leon. Lopez was left on the bench in the recent 2-2 draw with Cruz Azul and has yet to gain playing time this season.

What this means: Like Mendoza, Lopez will have to wait before earning a call-up with the national team. Looking ahead, the talented and flashy central midfielder still needs to make a name for himself before donning an El Tri jersey.
