Alex McCarthy replaces Southampton teammate Fraser Forster for England

Alex McCarthy has replaced fellow Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the England squad for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Slovakia, the Football Association has announced.

McCarthy moved to St Mary's from Crystal Palace last month and now replaces Forster at international level after his new clubmate suffered an arm injury.

The 26-year-old won three caps at under-21 level earlier in his career, which has also included spells at Queens Park Rangers and Reading.

Forster heads in the other direction after being sent back to his club to receive treatment. He had been in the frame to start what will be the first match of Allardyce's reign.

Joe Hart is now favourite to start Sunday's clash in Slovakia, having just completed a loan move to Torino from Manchester City.
