FC Cincinnati hire Nijkamp to general manager role

Struggling MLS expansion side FC Cincinnati on Wednesday hired a Eredivisie technical director Gerard Nijkamp as its general manager.

The move to bring aboard Nijkamp from the club PEC Zwolle in Netherlands comes just over three weeks after the club fired head coach Alan Koch following a slow start and hired Yoann Damet as the interim head coach.

Nijkamp, who spent seven years at PEC Zwolle, will report to team president Jeff Berding, who was the team's original GM when the club was founded in 2015. PEC Zwolle finished as high as sixth place in the Eredivisie in 2014-15 and is known for developing players through its own system.

"I think I showed in the last seven years that I can build a club to a high level," Nijkamp said on Thursday after being hired. "To get stability in the league, winning cups and to also implement, development a youth academy structure, scouting and recruitment system and the value of the first team.

"That's a competence of mine. That's the challenge I'm facing in Cincinnati, to build together to take FC Cincinnati to the next level."

FC Cincinnati has won just once in its last 10 matches and at 3-9-2 (11 points), the team sits last in the Eastern Conference in its first season in MLS.
