Borussia Dortmund defend under-19 title in front of record crowd

Borussia Dortmund became the first team to defend the German under-19 title by beating Bayern Munich 8-7 on penalties in front of a record crowd of 33,450 fans.

Five Borussia Dortmund youngsters including senior team player Felix Passlack on Monday put their name down into the history book of German football by winning a fourth consecutive youth title after a goalless 120 minutes at the Westfalenstadion.

They followed in the footsteps of the club's former goalkeeper Matthias Kleinsteiber, who achieved a similar feat in the 1990s.

Despite not only losing several players through injury during the season but also coach Hannes Wolf to Stuttgart's senior team, Dortmund became the first ever team to defend the under-19 Bundesliga title.

Dortmund's class of 1998 -- which includes the likes of United States international Christian Pulisic, Denmark youth international Jacob-Bruun Larsen and versatile Germany youth international Felix Passlack -- has been labelled a "once in a century generation" by Schalke academy coach Norbert Elgert.

However, for large parts of the season several players were not available after being promoted to the first team or sustaining injuries.

"I would like to agree with Mr. Elgert if we had all players available throughout the season," BVB under-19 coach Benjamin Hoffman told Reviersport. "But we never had this situation in the entire season. There was no Christian Pulisic for us. And Jacob-Bruun Larsen has been sidelined with an injury for large parts."
