Bayern Munich boosted by returns of Mats Hummels, David Alaba to training

Bayern Munich have received an injury boost as defenders Mats Hummels and David Alaba both returned to training on Monday.

Hummels missed both of Bayern's wins following the winter break (3-1 vs Leverkusen; 4-2 vs. Werder Bremen) with a heavy cold and a subsequent fever. His wife Cathy also gave birth to the couple's first child on Jan. 11.

Niklas Sule filled in for his fellow Germany international in both games, but scored an own goal in Sunday's victory against Bremen.

Meanwhile, Alaba has recovered from a stomach bug which ruled him out at the weekend as Spain international Juan Bernat deputised at left-back for his third Bundesliga appearance of the season.

With the return of Hummels and Alaba, the German champions are now only missing Thiago Alcantara and Manuel Neuer from their first team squad.

Thiago suffered "a serious muscle injury" in the 2-1 Champions League victory over Anderlecht in November. However, the former Barcelona midfielder was able to return to the training pitch for the first time on Friday for some light running.

Neuer has fractured his foot three times in the past year and hasn't played since undergoing an operation in September.

Following the latest break, the Bayern and Germany captain said that his recovery could take at least six months. However, Neuer is off his crutches and is stepping up his comeback bid in the gym.
